Padel is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, squash and badminton. It is played in doubles format only and can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors.
Padel was invented by Enrique Corcuera, a Mexican businessman, who created the first padel court in his garden in Acapulco in 1969. The first padel club was founded in Marbella in 1974, at the instigation of Prince Alfonso de Holenlohe-Langenburg, who was a friend of Corcuera's and a huge fan of the sport. Padel went on to become very popular in Spain, which has had a professional circuit since 2005. Over the last 10 years, padel has continued to spread rapidly to the rest of Europe and the United States.
In Belgium, padel has been under the aegis of the Belgian Tennis Federation since 2012. The Federation promotes the sport widely in tennis clubs which, following the Spanish model, are now building more and more courts. It also organises competitions, including the first official regional championships in 2020.
It's fun, it's accessible and it's social... Padel is now played by more than 10 million people and is the fastest-growing sport in the world.
